Appointment of District Judges
- In October, 2025, the Supreme Court Constitution Bench led by CJI B.R. Gavai ruled that judicial officers with at least 7 years of prior Bar experience are eligible for appointment as District Judges.
- The judgment aims to facilitate lateral entry of experienced advocates and strengthen the quality of district judiciary.
Constitutional Provisions and Eligibility
- Article 233 governs the appointment, posting, and promotion of District Judges in every Indian state.
- The Governor makes these appointments in close consultation with the High Court exercising state jurisdiction.
- Candidates for direct recruitment must have at least seven years of practice as an advocate.
