Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve (CDBR)
On February 15, 2026, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) announced a new Integrated Management Plan for the Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve to mitigate increasing human-wildlife conflict in the trans-Himalayan belt.
- Established in 2009, the Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve (CDBR) is a high-altitude protected area located in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.
- It encompasses a vast area of approximately 7,770 square kilometres within the Lahaul and Spiti districts.
- The reserve is characterized by its extreme aridity, sub-zero temperatures, and unique rain-shadow topography of the Himalayas.
