Deepavali – Inscribed in UNESCO ICH List

In December 2025, Deepavali has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity. The recognition was announced during the 20th session of the UNESCO ICH Committee held in New Delhi.

  • The UNESCO ICH List was created under the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
  • It aims to safeguard living cultural traditions threatened by globalisation and promote cultural diversity, awareness, and respect.
  • Intangible heritage includes:
    • Oral traditions, performing arts, rituals, festivals
    • Social practices, traditional craftsmanship
    • Knowledge systems related to nature and the universe ....
