Goniopora Corals (Flowerpot Corals)
In September 2025, a study published in Nature Climate Change identified specific epigenetic markers in Goniopora populations that allow them to survive prolonged marine heatwaves.
- Researchers at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) in February 2026 successfully demonstrated a "micro-fragmentation" technique for Goniopora, accelerating their growth rate by forty percent.
- During the 2025 global mass bleaching event, monitoring stations in the Gulf of Mannar reported that while branching corals (Acropora) suffered eighty percent mortality, Goniopora colonies showed a bleaching resistance rate of nearly ninety percent.
