India’s First-ever Open-sea Marine Fish Farming
- In January 2026, Union government launched India’s first-ever open-sea Marine Fish Farming project from the Andaman Sea.
- It is first pilot open-sea aquaculture initiative involving marine finfish and seaweed farming in natural oceanic conditions using indigenously developed open-sea cages and marine technologies.
- It aims to unlock ocean-based economic potential, generate sustainable coastal livelihoods, and build technical feasibility for scaling open-sea aquaculture under India’s Blue Economy vision.
- Implementing Agencies: Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) & National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) andUT Administration of Andaman and Nicobar Islands
