Nafithromycin – India’s First Indigenous Antibiotic

On 20 November 2024, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launched India’s first indigenously developed antibiotic for resistant infections.

  • The antibiotic is named Nafithromycin.
  • It has been developed with support from the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC).
  • BIRAC is a not-for-profit public sector enterprise under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India.
  • The antibiotic has been commercialized by Wockhardt under the brand name “Miqnaf.”
  • It is specifically designed to combat Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), a major global health challenge.
  • Nafithromycin is used for the treatment of Community-Acquired Bacterial Pneumonia (CABP).
