National Highways Green Cover Index (NH-GCI) Report 2026
On 9th March 2026, the Government of India released the National Highways Green Cover Index (NH-GCI) Annual Report 2025-26, the first satellite-based assessment of vegetation along India’s national highways.
- Prepared by the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of ISRO in collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
What is the National Highways Green Cover Index (NH-GCI)?
- A satellite-based system to monitor vegetation along national highway corridors.
- Measures roadside green cover using GIS mapping and remote sensing data.
- Highways are divided into 1-km segments to assess vegetation density.
- The first monitoring cycle covers 30,000 km of highways across 24 states.
