Sundarbans Becomes India’s Second Largest Tiger Reserve

On 19 August 2025, the National Board for Wildlife approved the proposal of the West Bengal government to expand the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve.

  • The reserve area has been increased by approximately 1,044.68 square kilometres, taking its total area to about 3,629.57 square kilometres.
  • The expansion includes the incorporation of three tiger-inhabited forest ranges, namely Matla, Raidighi, and Ramganga, located in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
  • With this expansion, the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve has become the second-largest tiger reserve in India.
