Thwaites Glacier (Doomsday Glacier)

  • A 30-year study released in March 2026 revealed that the Thwaites grounding line-the point where the glacier meets the seabed-has retreated by 26 kilometres since the 1990s.
    • Thwaites Glacier, widely known as the "Doomsday Glacier," is the world’s widest glacier, spanning approximately 120 kilometres along the Amundsen Sea in West Antarctica.
    • It is roughly the size of Great Britain (or Florida) and acts as a critical "cork" or stabilizer for the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS).
