UN Extends UNAMA Mandate in Afghanistan
On 16th March 2026, the UN Security Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for three months.
- UNAMA was established in 2002 after Taliban’s first regime ended.
- The mandate is usually renewed annually.
- The decision follows a U.S. call to review engagement with Taliban.
- China drafted the resolution for mandate extension.
- The short extension allows time for further discussions.
- Afghanistan continues to face a severe humanitarian crisis.
- Around 17.5 million people need humanitarian assistance in 2026.
- Around 4.7 million people face emergency hunger levels.
