WMO Report Flags Record Rise in Earth’s Energy Imbalance
On 23rd March 2026, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released the report “State of the Global Climate 2025”, stating that Earth’s energy imbalance has reached its highest level in at least 65 years.
What is Earth’s Energy Imbalance?
- Difference between incoming solar energy and outgoing heat from Earth.
- Normally remains balanced (equilibrium).
- Currently, more energy is retained than released, causing warming.
Key Findings of the Report
- Heat accumulation has accelerated sharply (2001-2025).
- 91% of excess heat absorbed by oceans.
- Ocean warming has set records for 9 consecutive years.
- Global temperature ~1.43°C above pre-industrial levels.
Impacts on Earth Systems
- Oceans: Rising ....
