Offshore Aquifers
- In September 2025, a team of international scientists confirmed the presence of a massive offshore freshwater aquifer beneath the Atlantic Ocean, stretching from New Jersey to Maine.
- Offshore aquifers are bodies of porous rock or sediment located beneath the sea floor that store freshwater, similar to aquifers on land.
- They likely formed during past ice ages when sea levels were lower, or through connections with onshore aquifers, and are capped by compacted clay layers preventing saltwater intrusion.
