Srivilliputhur-Meghamalai Tiger Reserve (SMTR)
Recently, concerns have arisen over unauthorized road construction within the Srivilliputhur–Meghamalai Tiger Reserve (SMTR) in the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats.
- SMTR, located in the Southern Western Ghats across Virudhunagar and Madurai districts of Tamil Nadu, is the state’s 5th tiger reserve and India’s 51st tiger reserve.
- Formed in February 2021, it combines the Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary and Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary and serves as a corridor linking Kerala’s Periyar Tiger Reserve to Tamil Nadu’s Southern Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve.
