Biological Diversity (Amendment) Act, 2023 and Rules, 2024: Key Changes
The Biological Diversity Act, 2002 was enacted to implement India’s obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), 1992. It established frameworks for conservation of biodiversity, sustainable use of biological resources, and equitable sharing of benefits (ABS).
Recent Developments
- The Biological Diversity (Amendment) Act, 2023 came into force in August 2023, followed by the notification of the Biological Diversity Rules, 2024 in April.
- The amendments aim to facilitate ease of doing business in AYUSH, agriculture, and biotechnology sectors, while strengthening biodiversity protection.
