Eco-Sensitive Zones: Recent Notifications and Legal Battles
Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZs) are buffer areas around Protected Areas (PAs) such as National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries, notified under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. They aim to create a transition zone that minimizes anthropogenic pressures while promoting sustainable livelihoods. The MoEFCC guidelines (2011) prescribe ESZs ranging from 100 m to 10 km.
