India-China Trade via Lipulekh Pass: Nepal’s Objection Dismissed

On 20th August 2025, India dismissed Nepal’s protest over the reopening of India-China border trade via the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, asserting that Kathmandu’s claims lack “historical validity.”

Nepal’s Position

  • Nepal asserts that Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh, and Kalapani lie east of the Mahakali River and are integral parts of Nepal, as per its official map incorporated in the Constitution.
  • Nepal has consistently urged India to avoid road construction and trade activities in the area and also raised its claims with China.

India’s Response

  • MEA stated that border trade through Lipulekh has been ongoing since 1954 and is not a new development.
