NASA Unveils Surya AI Model to Decode Sun’s Behaviour
On 20th August 2025, NASA introduced the Surya Heliophysics Foundational Model, an AI system developed with IBM and partners to analyse the Sun’s complex activity and improve space weather forecasting.
- Trained on nine years of continuous data from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), Surya helps predict solar eruptions and flares, which threaten satellites, GPS, communication networks, and power grids.
- Initial tests show Surya can provide visual forecasts up to two hours in advance, performing 16% better than current prediction methods.
- NASA has open-sourced Surya on HuggingFace and released the code on GitHub, enabling global researchers, educators, and innovators to build on its ....
