System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA)
Traditional national accounts such as GDP measure economic performance but ignore the depletion of natural resources and degradation of ecosystems. To address this gap, the United Nations Statistical Division (UNSD) developed the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) – an integrated statistical framework linking environmental data with economic accounts.
- In September 2024, MoSPI released the seventh consecutive edition of EnviStats India, aligning with the SEEA framework. The 2024 edition, for the first time, included accounts for ocean ecosystems, detailing their extent and condition.
- The report provided updated data on the Soil Nutrient Index, biodiversity, energy accounts, and protected area coverage.
