The Industrial Relations Code (Amendment) Act, 2026

On 16th February 2026, the Industrial Relations Code (Amendment) Bill 2026, received the Presidential assent.

  • The Act amends the Industrial Relations Code, 2020 and provides clarity regarding the repeal and transition framework of legacy labour laws.

Major Amendments

Repeal of Three Labour Laws

  • The following enactments stand repealed from the notified date:
    1. Trade Unions Act, 1926
    2. Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Act, 1946
    3. Industrial Disputes Act, 1947
  • This step completes the consolidation of these 3 central labour laws under the Industrial Relations Code framework.

Continuity of Tribunals and Authorities

  • A significant addition is sub-section (1A), which ensures continuity and prevents administrative disruption.
