Return of Blackbucks in Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary
- After nearly five decades, blackbucks — locally extinct — have successfully been reintroduced in Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary, Chhattisgarh.
- The Chhattisgarh State Wildlife Board launched the reintroduction program in 2018.
- Between 2021 and 2026, 77 blackbucks were relocated.
- The sanctuary now has 190 blackbucks.
- The blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra), also known as the Indian antelope, is found in India and Nepal.
- In India, it is mainly found in Velavadar Blackbuck Sanctuary (Gujarat), Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary (Tamil Nadu), and Tal Chhapar Sanctuary (Rajasthan).
