As space exploration advances, planetary defence and asteroid mining have become two major areas. NASA’s DART and ESA’s Hera missions are significant steps in this direction.
Planetary Defence: DART Mission and Its Legacy
- DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) is NASA’s key planetary Defence mission.
- Launch: November 2021.
- Target: Didymos and its moonlet Dimorphos.
- Impact on 26 September 2022 shortened Dimorphos’s orbit by 32 minutes.
- Success: Effectively confirmed altering the asteroid’s path.
- LICIACube (mission companion) captured images of the impact and debris.
Follow-up: ESA’s Hera Mission
- Launch: October 2024.
- Will conduct an in-depth study of the Didymos system.
- Will analyze Dimorphos’s mass, internal structure, and impact site.
