INS Arihant

It is India’s first indigenous nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), a key component of the Indian Navy’s nuclear deterrence capability.

Design and Technology

  • Class: Arihant-class SSBN.
  • Displacement: 6,000 tons (surface), 6,800 tons (submerged).
  • Length: 112 meters; Width: 11 meters.
  • Reactor: 83 MW pressurized water reactor (PWR) developed by BARC.
  • Propulsion: Nuclear-powered, 47,000 hp; 24 knots submerged, 15 knots surfaced.

Weapons

  • SLBMs: 4 tubes, each can carry 3 K-15 (750 km) or 1 K-4 (3,500 km). Total of 12 K-15 or 4 K-4 missiles.
