Climate Crisis Driving Surge in Gender-Based Violence

On 22nd April 2025, a new UN report warned that climate change is significantly increasing the risks of gender-based violence (GBV), particularly intimate partner violence, with projections showing a rise in such violence linked to global temperature increases.

Why This Matters

  • The report predicts that with each 1°C rise in global temperature, intimate partner violence (IPV) is expected to increase by 4.7%. In a 2°C scenario, 40 million additional women and girls could experience IPV annually by 2090.
