New Freshwater Fish Species Discovered in Western Ghats

On 23rd April 2025, researchers at the Centre for Peninsular Aquatic Genetic Resources, Kochi, announced that they have discovered two new species of freshwater fish in the Western Ghats.

  • Labeo uru, named after a traditional wooden dhow for its sail-like fins, was found in the Chandragiri River in Kerala.
  • Labeo chekida, known locally as ‘kaka chekida’, inhabits the Chalakudy River in Kerala.
  • Both species are endemic to their respective river systems, highlighting the Western Ghats as a biodiversity hotspot.
