Declining Chambal Flow Threatens Dolphin Habitat
In April 2026, a report titled “Ecological Assessment of the Chambal River: Status of Major Aquatic Fauna and Flow Requirements” by Wildlife Institute of India highlighted that falling water levels in the Chambal River are impacting Ganges river dolphin populations.
- Dolphins are shifting downstream towards the Yamuna River due to reduced water depth in upper stretches.
- Dolphins require water depths of over 3 metres, making low-flow conditions critical for survival.
- Exposed river islands threaten nesting birds such as Indian skimmer and black-bellied terns.
- Land bridges formed during low water allow predators like jackals and stray dogs to destroy nests.
