India Withdraws Bid to Host COP 33
In April 2026, India withdrew its bid to host the 33rd Conference of Parties (COP 33) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, citing a review of its commitments for 2028.
What is COP?
- Annual global climate conference under UNFCCC.
- Brings together countries to:
- Negotiate climate action, and
- Review progress on emission targets.
- Central to implementation of Paris Agreement.

- India had announced interest at COP 28 (Dubai, 2023).
- Withdrawal communicated via a letter by MoEFCC (April 2, 2026).
- Reason: “Review of commitments for 2028”.
