Super El Niño
Recently, scientists warned that a possible super El Niño could intensify global extreme weather and push temperatures to record highs.
- Super El Niño is an exceptionally strong phase of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
- It occurs when sea surface temperatures rise ≥2°C above normal in the central/eastern Pacific.
- ENSO is a coupled ocean-atmosphere system influencing global climate patterns.
- During El Niño, weakened trade winds allow warm water to spread eastward.
- A super El Niño amplifies impacts on rainfall, droughts, storms and heatwaves.
- Typically recurs every 3-7 years, but super events are rare.
- Effects: droughts in India, Australia, Africa; heavy rains in Americas and parts of Asia.
