Super El Niño

Recently, scientists warned that a possible super El Niño could intensify global extreme weather and push temperatures to record highs.

  • Super El Niño is an exceptionally strong phase of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
  • It occurs when sea surface temperatures rise ≥2°C above normal in the central/eastern Pacific.
  • ENSO is a coupled ocean-atmosphere system influencing global climate patterns.
  • During El Niño, weakened trade winds allow warm water to spread eastward.
  • A super El Niño amplifies impacts on rainfall, droughts, storms and heatwaves.
