Kashmir Glacial Lakes Face High GLOF Risk

Recently, five glacial lakes in the Kashmir Himalayas- Bramsar, Chirsar, Nundkol, Gangabal, and Bhagsar have been identified as highly vulnerable to Glacial Lake Outburst Flood events.

  • The assessment was based on a geospatial study by the University of Kashmir.
  • Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) are sudden releases of water from glacial lakes caused by factors like rapid snowmelt, heavy rainfall, earthquakes, or moraine dam failure.
  • Around 2,700+ buildings, 15 bridges, roads, and a hydropower project are at potential risk in downstream areas.
