India’s National Repository for Deep-Sea Fauna

Recently, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change designated the “Bhavasagara” Referral Center for Marine Living Resources & Ecology (CMLRE) as India’s National Repository for Deep-Sea Fauna under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

Institutions Notified

  • “Bhavasagara” Referral Centre (CMLRE, Kochi)
    • Dedicated to deep-sea biodiversity.
    • Houses 3,500+ geo-referenced marine specimens.
    • Focus on invertebrates and deep-sea fishes.
  • MACS Collection of Microorganisms & National Fungal Culture Collection (ARI, Pune)
    • Specialises in microbial and fungal preservation.
    • Includes rare, anaerobic and extremophilic species.
    • Supports agriculture, health, and industrial research.

Key Guidelines

  • New species discoveries must be:
    • Reported to designated repositories, and
    • Deposited as voucher specimens.
  • NBA sets:
    • Criteria for repository recognition.
    • Scientific and procedural standards.
