Mass Death of Himalayan Griffon Vultures

In April 2026, at least 25 Himalayan Griffon Vulture were found dead near Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, raising concerns over suspected poisoning and ecological risks.

What Happened?

  • Incident reported in Semariya village, Lakhimpur Kheri (UP).
  • Total impact:
    • 25 vultures dead, and
    • 6 rescued (4 later recovered and flew away).

Suspected Cause

  • Secondary poisoning suspected.
  • Likely sequence:
    • Poisoned rice left to kill stray dogs.
    • Dogs consumed it and died.
    • Vultures fed on carcasses → got poisoned.

What is Secondary Poisoning?

  • Occurs when predators/scavengers: Consume animals already exposed to toxins.
  • Common in:
    • Pesticide misuse
    • Chemical baiting
