Bactrian Camels at Republic Day Parade

For the first time, double-humped Bactrian camels named ‘Galwan’ and ‘Nubra’ featured at the 77th Republic Day Parade on Kartavya Path, symbolising India’s renewed focus on high-altitude military logistics in Eastern Ladakh using indigenous, climate-resilient pack animals.

What are Bactrian Camels?

  • A double-humped camel species adapted to cold deserts of Central Asia.
  • In India, found only in Nubra Valley (Ladakh).
  • Locally called the Mundri camel.
  • Critically Rare: ~365 individuals in India.

Key Biological Adaptations

  • Two Humps: Fat storage (not water) > allows survival 2-3 weeks without food.
  • Specialised red blood cells > function efficiently in low oxygen.
  • Can withstand:
    • Temperatures up to -40°C
    • Low atmospheric pressure
