Dispute Over ESZ of Bannerghatta National Park
On 7th January 2026, the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) submitted its report to the Supreme Court, recommending the restoration of the Ecologically Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around Bengaluru’s Bannerghatta National Park to its original 2016 extent, citing ecological and wildlife conservation concerns.
- The Committee noted that the ESZ area had been substantially reduced in 2020 following the issuance of a government notification.
Key Recommendations of the CEC Report
- Withdrawal of the 2020 ESZ notification for excluding elephant corridors and ecologically significant patches.
- Restoration of the 2016 ESZ extent, with changes allowed only in cases of dense, irreversible urban development.
