Centre Declares Eco-Sensitive Zone Around Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary

Recently, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has notified an Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) covering 0-1 km around the Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary in Rajasthan’s Aravalli range, to restrict environmentally hazardous activities across 243 sq km.

About Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Location: Rajasthan (Rajsamand, Pali and Udaipur districts); 80 km north of Udaipur.
  • Ecosystem: Aravalli hills, among the oldest mountain ranges in the world.
  • Faunal Diversity: Leopard, striped hyena, jungle cat, Indian pangolin, blue bull, wild boar & chinkara.

What is an Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ)?

  • ESZs are buffer areas around Protected Areas (National Parks/Wildlife Sanctuaries).
  • Notified under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
