Bio-Bitumen and Clean, Green Highways
On 7th January 2026, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, and Vice-President, CSIR, announced that India has entered the era of “Clean, Green Highways” with the launch of bio-bitumen technology for road construction.
Background
- India consumes large quantities of petroleum-based bitumen for road construction, most of which is imported at an annual cost of ₹25,000-30,000 crore.
- At the same time, stubble burning from farm residues like paddy straw causes severe air pollution.
- To tackle both challenges, indigenous institutions developed bio-bitumen through pyrolysis, converting biomass into road-binding material.
