Freedom of Religion Bill, 2026

  • On 16th March 2026, the Maharashtra Assembly passed the Freedom of Religion Bill, 2026 by voice vote.
  • The Bill aims to prohibit religious conversions through coercion, fraud, inducement, or marriage.
  • Unlawful conversions on the pretext of marriage will attract imprisonment of up to 7 years and a fine of Rs.1 lakh.
  • Violations involving minors, women, persons of unsound mind, or SC/ST communities will invite 7 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs.5 lakh.
  • Mass conversions will be punishable with 7 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs.5 lakh.
