Supreme Court Steps in to Protect National Chambal Sanctuary
On 13th March 2026, the Supreme Court of India took suo motu cognisance of illegal sand mining threatening the fragile ecosystem of the National Chambal Sanctuary.
What is the National Chambal Sanctuary?
- A tri-state riverine protected area across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
- Covers about 960 km of the Chambal River, with nearly 600 km designated as sanctuary area.
- Notified in 1978 and known for its unique lotic (flowing river) ecosystem.
Key Ecological Importance
- Major habitat and breeding ground for the Critically Endangered Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus).
- Also supports species such as:
- Gangetic River Dolphin
- Marsh Crocodile (Mugger)
- Smooth-coated Otter
- Red-crowned Roof Turtle
- Indian Skimmer and Black-bellied Tern
