9 New Species Discovered in Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary
Recently, researchers discovered nine new species in Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary.
- The discovery was made by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI).
- The sanctuary is located in the southern Western Ghats.
- The findings are based on surveys conducted between 2018 and 2022.
- The study documented a total of 977 species across 21 faunal groups.
- These include 511 vertebrates and 466 invertebrates.
- New species include a jumping spider, damselfly, mayflies and snails.
- Some species are endemic to the Megamalai–Periyar landscape.
- Many recorded species act as bio-indicators of ecosystem health.
