Acts to Modernise India’s Maritime Sector
In August 2025, the President of India gave assent to 3 landmark maritime bills. These laws aim to overhaul colonial-era regulations and aim to modernise the maritime sector.
- The reforms focus on improving trade efficiency, environmental safeguards, and coastal shipping. They align India’s maritime sector with global standards under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
Overview of the Three Maritime Acts
1. The Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 2025 (Received Presidential Assent on 8th August 2025)
The Act replaces the nearly century-old Indian Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1925 with legislation that reflects modern international shipping practices.
