Gerrymandering
In August 2025, Texas (US) plunged into a political standoff after Republican leaders, backed by President Donald Trump, initiated a rare mid-decade redrawing of electoral districts to favour their party ahead of the 2026 midterms.
- Gerrymandering is the redrawing of electoral districts to benefit one party over another.
- Tactics include:
- Packing – concentrating opposition voters into a few districts so they win big only there.
- Cracking – splitting opposition voters across districts so they cannot form a majority.
- Gerrymandering skews democracy by allowing politicians to “choose their voters” instead of voters choosing representatives.
