UNHCR Suspends Repatriation of Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees
On 14th August 2025, the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) called off the repatriation of seven Sri Lankan Tamil refugees from Tiruchi to Colombo after reports emerged of arrests of returnees under Sri Lankan immigration laws.
Background
- Since 2002, UNHCR has facilitated the voluntary return of 18,643 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees from India.
- For the first time, Sri Lankan authorities have begun arresting returning refugees on charges of leaving the country without valid passports or travel documents.
