First Equine Disease-Free Compartment (EDFC)

India recently set up its first Equine Disease-Free Compartment (EDFC) at the Remount Veterinary Corps Centre & College in Meerut Cantonment, Uttar Pradesh.

  • Officially recognised by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) — a key step to enable Indian sport horses to compete internationally.
  • Developed jointly by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Ministry of Defence, Equestrian Federation of India (EFI), and Government of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Ensures compliance with WOAH guidelines: includes robust biosecurity, veterinary surveillance, and disease exclusion protocols.
