Centre of Excellence for Hornbill Conservation

Tamil Nadu has announced India’s first Centre of Excellence for Hornbill Conservation at the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR), Coimbatore.

  • Hornbills, known as “farmers of the forest”, are key seed dispersers but are under threat from deforestation, habitat loss, and climate change.
  • Rs. 1 crore has been sanctioned under the Endangered Species Conservation Corpus Fund by the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests.
  • The Centre will focus on four hornbill species in the Western Ghats: Great Hornbill, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Malabar Pied Hornbill, and Indian Grey Hornbill.
