Flash Floods in India: New Study Highlights Alarming Trends

A new study by IIT Gandhinagar, published on 13th July 2025, revealed the alarming rise and underlying drivers of flash floods across India.

  • The study, titled Drivers of Flash Floods in the Indian Sub-Continental River Basins, offers the first detailed multi-variable analysis of flash flood events across Indian river systems.

Key Findings

  • Only 25% of flash floods are caused by extreme rainfall alone.
  • The remaining 75% are driven by a combination of factors: high rainfall over saturated soils, steep terrain, and high surface runoff potential.
