Genetic Analysis of Rhino Horns in Assam
On 3-8th July 2025, genetic analysis was initiated on 2,573 rhino horn samples collected during 2021 destruction drive.
- DNA analysis is part of RhoDIS India (Rhino DNA Index System) under Wildlife Institute of India (WII) supervision.
- RhoDIS India launched in 2016 as a collaboration between the Environment Ministry, WII, WWF-India, and rhino-range States.
- Greater One-Horned Rhino (Indian Rhino) is one of the largest of all rhino species; identifiable by a single black horn (8–25 inches) and armour-like skin folds.
- Herbivorous grazer; diet includes grasses, leaves, fruits, and aquatic plants.
