Kaziranga Conducts First-Ever Grassland Bird Census

In July 2025, Indian PM announced that Kaziranga National Park carried out a pioneering survey (Between March and May 2024) to count grassland bird species using acoustic monitoring tools—an initiative sparked by a research fellowship awarded to a PhD student.

What did the survey aim to do?

  • The census aimed to document bird species in Kaziranga’s vast grassland habitat, which covers nearly 70% of the park.
  • It prioritized 10 globally threatened or endemic species like Bengal Florican, Swamp Francolin, and Finn’s Weaver.
