Cheetah Reintroduction in Banni Grasslands

The Banni Grasslands in Gujarat, the largest grassland in the Indian subcontinent, is now fully prepared for cheetah rehabilitation.

  • A breeding centre has been established and efforts are ongoing to boost the prey base by reintroducing chital and sambar.
  • A 600-hectare enclosure has been developed with quarantine and soft release bomas, CCTV monitoring, fencing, and a veterinary care facility.
  • The habitat in Banni matches the grasslands, savannahs, and scrublands preferred by African cheetahs.
  • Vantara, a conservation facility run by Reliance Foundation, has reintroduced spotted deer into Banni to restore ecological balance.
