- A recent Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) report has raised concerns about high levels of faecal coliform bacteria in the Ganga near Prayagraj, posing potential health risks for millions of Maha Kumbh pilgrims.
- Faecal coliform bacteria originate from human and animal waste and can contaminate water through sewage discharge, potentially carrying harmful pathogens like E. coli and Salmonella.
- Exposure to contaminated water can cause gastrointestinal infections, skin and eye irritations, typhoid, hepatitis A, and even respiratory illnesses due to inhalation of bacteria-laden water droplets.
