New Quantum State in Twisted Graphene
- Researchers have recently discovered a new class of quantum states in specially engineered graphene, known as topological electronic crystals.
- The study, focuses on twisted bilayer–trilayer graphene, a material created by stacking ultra-thin graphene layers with a precise rotational twist, altering their electronic properties.
- When stacked with a small twist, graphene layers form a moiré pattern, which dramatically changes how electrons move, slowing them down and introducing a vortex-like motion.
- This phenomenon is topologically protected, meaning the current along the edges remains stable regardless of environmental disorder, much like the way a Möbius strip maintains its one-sided nature.
- The study suggests that this topological electron ....
