Vadhavan Port: India’s First Mega Port
On 19th June, 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the development of an “all-weather greenfield deep draft major port" at Vadhavan in Palghar district of Maharashtra.
- A deep draft port is a port that can accommodate large vessels such as big cargo ships.
Need for Deep Draft Port
- The Jawaharlal Nehru Port, located in Navi Mumbai, is currently chock-a-block.
- The Vadhavan port is expected to ease the burden off Jawaharlal Nehru Port.
- Vadhavan is one of those most significant natural sites along the west coast of India where natural draft is 20 metres. It’s a very significant parameter for developing a new port.
