Bonalu Festival
The Bonalu festival 2025 began on June 26 2025, at the Sri Jagadamba Mahankali Temple atop Golconda Fort, drawing massive public participation and state-level recognition.
- The word “Bonalu” comes from the Telugu word Bonam, meaning “meal” or “feast.” This refers to the special food offerings prepared for the goddess as a form of thanksgiving and devotion.
- The festival’s origins trace back to the early 19th century during a deadly plague in Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
- Locals prayed to Goddess Mahakali for protection, promising offerings if the plague ended.
